Charge controllers come in various types. Solar charge controllers regulate the charge from a solar panel array to a battery bank. Solar lighting controllers allow you to control DC lights while simultaneously charging a battery bank from solar panels.
Since solar energy power systems almost always gather power and store it in batteries, almost every system requires a charge controller. A solar charge controller will protect your batteries from being overcharged by your solar panels and it will block any reverse current (from the batteries) as well. Solar charge controllers will actually protect every aspect of your solar power system from your batteries to your solar panels. Temperature sensors are an inexpensive addition that help the charge controller more accurately regulate the charge of the battery bank

You'll notice that solar charge controllers are specified by both amperage and voltage. You will need a charge controller that matches the voltage of your solar panel array and battery bank. (Usually 12, 24 or 48 VDC) And you'll want to make sure the solar panel charge controller has enough capacity to handle the current (in amps) from your solar panel array. The basic formula for sizing a solar panel charge controller is to take the short circuit current (Isc) of the array, and multiply it by 1.56. Be sure that the charge controller you select can handle at least that many amps. Please protect this important part of your system with appropriate overcurrent protection before and after the controller.

Now that you know what size controller to look for, identify which type of charge controller is right for your application: MPPT, PWM, and PWM shunt controllers. A PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) charge controller is the traditional style. They are robust, inexpensive and widely used in PV applications. PWM shunt controllers are used less often and mostly in applications where electrical interference is an issue. The MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) charge controller is the shining star of today's PV systems. These controllers actually detect the optimum operating voltage and amperage of the solar array and match that with the battery bank. The result is additional 15-30% more power out of your array versus a PWM controller. Although the MPPT controller is more expensive than its PWM counterpart, it is generally worth the investment for any solar electric system over 200 watts.

Traditional Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) charge controllers have been around for several years and force your solar panels to operate at the same voltage as your battery bank during charging. They tend to be less expensive than MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) charge controllers, but they're also less efficient than the MPPT type.

Maximum Power Point Tracking solar charge controllers or MPPT charge controllers are relatively new to the solar energy industry. These charge controllers are different than the traditional charge controllers in that they are more efficient and in many cases more feature rich. MPPT charge controllers allow your solar panels to operate at their optimum power output voltage, improving their performance by as much as 30%. Traditional charge controllers reduce the efficiency of one part of your system in order to make it work with another. Several MPPT charge controllers can accept high input voltages (up to 120V+ DC) from your solar array and efficiently down convert the DC voltage to that of your system (e.g. 12, 24, 48VDC, etc) which means you aren't losing any generated power and you are able to use what you generate more efficiently. Additionally, using a much higher DC voltage on the input side allows you to use thinner wire, decreasing your wire cost and making installation easier.
We carry all of the best brands of MPPT charge controllers. Although MPPT is more expensive, but the return on your investment will come that much more quickly as your system performance will be significantly improved. Choosing a well made charge controller is integral to the long life and efficiency of your entire solar power system. By optimizing the power coming in from your solar panels, you'll get that much closer to offsetting your use of traditional on grid power sources and by protecting your battery supply you protect yourself from any unwanted and unneeded replacement costs. Your solar charge controller is an item well worth investing in and researching as your customize your solar panel electric system. Make sure you choose an option that is scalable and appropriate for your power load and make sure that you have sufficient battery storage space for the solar panels you've chosen to install. Use our resources at solarpower-mart.com to construct the right solar power electric system for your home or alternate location. We'll advise you on everything from optimizing your current power load to how best to install your solar panels and on choosing the right solar charge controller!

With innovative maximum-power-tracking technology, Phocos' MPP-Tracker ensures maximum performance from your solar array at all times and in all weather conditions. The MPPT can yield an energy gain of up to 30% from your PV array (with the average gain being 10%-25%).
MPPT includes a sweep-function which runs through the whole solar-panel voltage range once every 2h to find the point of the absolute maximum power output
The temperature-compensated three-stage I-U curve charge regulation alogarithm significantly extends the lifespan of your battery.
The possibility to use less expensive grid-feed-in solar-panels with up to 95V open circuit voltage for 12V or 24V stand-alone systems will significantly reduce the cost of the total system.

Solar Boost 3024iL's advanced fully automatic 3-stage charge control system will properly charge flooded lead-acid, AGM and GEL batteries resulting in improved battery performance with less maintenance. The dual 30/40 amp rating will deliver at up to 30 amps in 24 volt systems, or up to 40 amps in 12 volt systems. An automatic or manual equalize function is also provided to periodically condition flooded lead-acid batteries. To further enhance versatility, a user configurable auxiliary output and Blue Sky Energy's advanced IPN™ network interface are also included.
Blue Sky Energy’s advanced Integrated Power Net™, or IPN Network, allows up to 8 IPN capable charge controllers to communicate with each other and operate as a single machine rather than separate charge controllers. The IPN network also allows networked controllers to share an optional battery temperature sensor and remote display. The IPN network does not require a display or other special hardware to operate.
The user configurable auxiliary output can serve as either a 20 amp load controller, or as a 2 amp auxiliary battery charger. The load control feature can be used to limit excessive battery discharge in unattended remote systems, whereas the auxiliary battery charge feature is ideal for charging a separate battery such as the engine battery in an RV. The auxiliary output can also provide fully adjustable dusk to dawn lighting control.

How Do Solar Boost Charge Controllers Increase Charge Current?
Solar Boost controllers increase charge current by operating the PV module in a manner that allows the module to produce all the power it is capable of. A conventional charge controller simply connects the module to the battery when the battery is discharged. When the 75W module in this example is connected directly to a battery charging at 12 volts its power production is artificially limited to about 53 watts. This wastes a whopping 22 watts or nearly 30% of the available power!
Patented MPPT technology used in Solar Boost controllers operates in a very different fashion. The Solar Boost controller continually calculates the module’s maximum power voltage, in this case 17 volts. It then operates the module at its maximum power voltage to extract maximum power. The higher power extracted from the module is then provided to the battery in the form of increased charge current. In conditions where extra PV power is not available, Solar Boost controllers will operate as a conventional controller with very low voltage drop.
Typical 75W PV Module Performance 25°C Cell • 1000W/m2

The actual charge current increase you will see varies primarily with module temperature and battery voltage. In comfortable temperatures, current increase typically varies between 10 to 25%, with 30% or more easily achieved with a discharged battery and cooler temperatures. What you can be sure of is that Solar Boost charge controllers will deliver the highest charge current possible for a given set of operating conditions.
